Description

Spinal injuries account for billions of dollars in workers compensation costs and lost productivity every year. These injuries also have a tremendous residual impact on the life of the injured individual and their family. We all hear the comments, "bend your knees, keep your back straight, lift with your legs, etc.", but what does this really mean? Why does this work? In this presentation the attendees will be given an advanced overview of the anatomy of the spine (cervical, thoracic and lumbar), how the biomechanics of the spine are designed and why certain tasks are more dangerous than others. The presentation will be at an advanced level, but the presenter will use simple terms to describe advanced topics in a language the non-medical person can understand. The medical person is likely to obtain a better understanding of the concepts as well. The information can be put to immediate use in your ergonomic programs and allow for better teaching and communication with employees.

Track(s)

Learning Objectives

Clarity of the injury potential of certain tissues in the spine.
Understanding the biomechanical risk factors and risk mitigators.
Obtain an ability to communicate these topics to everyday employees in a way they can understand so they can make better decisions about the way they work.
